Libby Prison War Museum Association records, 1889-1898.

Correspondence (1889-1890), bound list of ex-prisoners, account books (3 v., ca. 1892), and large register of visitors to the museum (1 v., 1889-1898) who had been prisoners of the Confederate States of America during the Civil War. Letters are chiefly addressed to Major R.C. Knaggs, the manager of Gunther's Libby Prison War Museum in Chicago, Illinois, from Civil War and Union army comrades, and from business men and dealers in collectibles, asking for information on various matters pertaining to Libby Prison and the museum. Includes requests for museum passes, pamphlets, and pictures for personal use and for advertising purposes; inquiries from ex-prisoners about reunions; suggestions for entertainments; and applications for employment. The register lists for each former prisoner: name, military rank, regiment, when and where captured, in what prison confined, and place of residence at the time of registration.

Charles Gunther purchased the walls of Libby Prison and moved them from Richmond, Virginia, to Chicago to house his museum.
